SOUND Asleep

Looking at the title of this blog post, SOUND Asleep, we are talking about loud snoring while sleeping.

The snoring sound is produced by the upper airways when air is being inhaled while we are asleep.

Coming from both or either the mouth and nose, it is normally a sign that partial of the airways are being blocked.

Men makes up 60 percent if the snorers between the age of 30 to 60. It can be a social problem causing one party to lose sleep because of the other snoring.

However, severe snoring can be a symptom of a more serious health condition known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea. It is an disorder characterized by often stopping in breathing, normally more than 10 seconds during sleep.

Such disruptions to the oxygen supply to a person forces the heart to beat harder and in turn, causes the blood pressure to rise. Over a period of time, this will lead to the increased risk of heart attack, stroke and high blood pressure.

Some people with Obstructive Sleep Apnea can experience choking while at sleep and at times, waking up gasping for air.

Other symptoms of such condition include waking up feeling tired, headaches in the morning, irritability and poor concentration.

If you are just a mild snorer, losing weight, sleeping on the side, not drinking before sleep or maintaining regular sleep patterns could help.

But if you suspect you are suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea, get yourself diagnosed by getting a sleep test available in most public hospitals in Singapore.
